There are, however, two commonly used engineering controls for needlestick safety: Needleless Systems and Sharps with Engineered Sharps Injury Protections (SESIP).
Needleless Systems are devices that don’t use a needle for:
-
The collection of blood and bodily fluids
-
The administration of medicine and medicinal fluids
-
Any other medical procedure with the potential for percutaneous (or puncture) exposure by a contaminated sharp
Sharps with Engineered Sharps Injury Protections (SESIP) are non-needle sharps or needle devices that contain a built-in safety mechanism that can reduce the risk of an exposure incident. Examples of a SESIP are:
-
Hypodermic syringes with a self-sheathing safety mechanism
-
Retractable syringes
-
Retractable lancets
-
Disposable scalpels with a retractable blade
