Operating Systems

An Operating System can be thought of as the “master software” on a computer. The operating system handles communication with IO devices, manages the computer’s resources and hardware, and sets the standards for all the software that runs on that computer. Software on a computer “talks” to the operating system for requests such as user interface (IO) and file management operations.

Two of the most popular are Windows and MAC OS.  Some examples of operating systems you may have heard of include:

  • Microsoft Windows
    • Windows 98
    • Windows XP
    • Windows Vista
  • Mac
    • Mac OS
    • Mac OS X
  • Linux
  • Unix

It is said that 90% of all personal computers have Windows as their operating system.  The remaining 10% have MAC OS.
