Software refers to programs that you download or install onto your computer to perform specific tasks and functions. Software “tells the computer what to do.” Software programs are available to create documents, play music files, browse the Internet, create artwork, help organize your finances, play games, and much more.

Common Software programs include:

Microsoft Office, which includes programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. These are all programs used to perform specific tasks and functions. If you were writing a research paper, you might use MS Word. Using MS Word would allow you to type your text and also perform editing, such as spell check.
Internet Explorer, a browser used to search and view Web pages on the Internet.
