Create your material view items as vector graphics in Flash and bring them into the material views as swf files. Test the difference with the same image in the material view using a bmp or png with a transparent background versus a swf file. Notice that the transparent background is still recognized as part of the image. The swf files provide better control and allow you to accurately place items in the material views.
